Tax sale overages lists by state and county
Data updated through Sep 4, 2026
When a property sells at a tax deed sale for more than the taxes owed, the excess, called surplus funds or excess proceeds, belongs to the former owner. Counties publish these amounts in scattered PDFs. TaxLienSimple currently tracks 8,086 verified records across 45 counties in 8 states, totaling $176,625,935, with every record traced to the official county report it came from. Of those, 4,348 records worth $93,883,108 are still inside their claim window; the rest are past the deadline the county published and are kept for reference only.
Surplus Pass, by state
$39 one time, 90 daysThis page shows totals and the largest county in each state. A state pass opens every verified record in that state for 90 days: the amount, the sale reference, the claim deadline and the official county source on each one, searchable and sortable, including records added while your pass is active. No subscription and no account needed to look.
Surplus funds belong to the former owner and recorded lienholders. Claims are filed directly with the county, and the county does not charge you to claim your own money. This buys access to collected public records, kept current. It is research, not a recovery service, and it is not a claim.

Surplus funds questions, answered
What is a surplus funds list?
A surplus funds list (also called an excess proceeds or overage list) records money left over when a property sells at a tax sale for more than the taxes owed. That excess belongs to the former owner or other lienholders, and counties publish lists of unclaimed amounts. Each county posts its own list separately, usually as a PDF; this page tracks them in one place.
How do I claim surplus funds?
Claims go through the county that held the sale, usually the clerk of court, treasurer, or tax collector. Each record here links to the official county source where the claim process and forms are published. Most states set a claim deadline, after which unclaimed money escheats to the county or state, so the deadline column matters more than the amount.
Is this list free?
State and county totals, record counts, and claim deadlines on these pages are free and always will be. The full searchable record list with every amount, sale reference, and deadline is part of TaxLienSimple membership.
How often is the data updated?
Records are re-checked against the official county reports on a weekly cycle. Every county page shows the date of the most recent source report we ingested, and every record traces back to a named official source.
